    Another few quotes I've seen attributed to him (some perhaps apocryphal, that are a little more lighthearted..

    In response to the accusation from a political opponent that he was two-faced:

    "If I had two faces, do you really think I would be wearing this one?"

    When asking his cabinit to vote on a proposal of his, he voted "aye", while all of the members of his cabinet voted "nay".....Then he announced the results:

    "Six nays, and one aye. The ayes have it."

    And, of course, his question to General McClellan who was excessively cautious during the Civil War.

    "If you don't want to use the army, do you mind if I borrow it for a while?"
